How do I prove my English proficiency?

If you are not a native speaker of the English language, you can submit proof of an English taught Bachelor programme. You can also submit results of an internationally recognized English language test. We prefer the IELTS test, but TOEFL, Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English are acceptable as well. Only Academic modules are accepted; The certificate need to be recent: not older than 2 years. Proficiency means an IELTS of 6.0. Leiden University requires an IELTS score of 6.5 or TOEFL of 90 (only for non-native English speakers; students from China should always submit an Academic IELTS score).

Students from English speaking countries and students that have completed their education in Canada, USA, UK, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia or obtained an International Baccalaureate or European Baccalaureate diploma do not have to submit test results.

Applicants from mainland China are specifically required to submit an Academic IELTS test score (no other results are accepted) due to visa requirements. Students from the mainland of China going to Leiden must have a Dutch NESO-certificate in due time. This is very important, no matter if you come to Leiden in the first year or in the second year. The strict deadline is 1 June. It takes about two months to receive the certificate, so the Chinese students must apply before 1 April, and they must have the IELTS score by this time.

How do I prove my English proficiency?

If you are not a native speaker of English, you must prove your English proficiency. You may do this by sending to us your score from one of the internationally recognized English testing systems, IELTS being one of them, but not the only one.

In exceptional cases, you may avoid submitting to us English testing results, if you manage to convince us that your command of English is sufficient: for instance, you lived and/or worked several years in English-spoken environment, studied in university with English as the teaching language, etc. But we do not promise to accept every explanation of this kind.

We prefer the IELTS test, but TOEFL, Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English are acceptable as well. If your working language should be other than English, it is up to you to provide the proof of sufficient proficiency in this language.
