Am I eligible for a Erasmus Mundus category A Master scholarship?
Only third-country applicants and the Western Balkans and Turkey Window applicants (meaning applicants from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Kosovo under UNSC Resolution 1244/99, as well as from Turkey) are eligible to apply for an Erasmus Mundus scholarship category A.
With the exception of the EU Member States, the EEA-EFTA states (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway) and the candidate countries for accession to the EU, all countries of the world are considered third countries.
"Third-country graduate student means a national of a third country other than those from EEA-EFTA States and candidate countries for accession to the European Union; who has already obtained a first higher education degree; who is not a resident of any of the Member States or the participating countries; who has not carried out his or her main activity (studies, work, etc.) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years in any of the Member States or the participating countries; and who has been accepted to register or is registered in an Erasmus Mundus Masters Course."
To qualify as a category A applicant, he/she must not have carried out his or her main activity (studies, work, etc.) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years in any of the EU Member States or the countries participating in the Consortium.
Individuals employed by EACEA are not eligible to apply for scholarships. Scholarship applications submitted directly to the Agency by individuals are not eligible for funding.
Am I eligible for a Erasmus Mundus category B Master scholarship?
Only European students and students who do not belong to the Category A are eligible to apply for an Erasmus Mundus scholarship category B.
European students are not eligible in a university where they have previously obtained a diploma.
Individuals employed by EACEA are not eligible to apply for scholarships.
Scholarship applications submitted directly to the Agency by individuals are not eligible for funding.
What is the amount of the ALGANT Master Scholarship?
This depends on the scholarship category you are eligible for.
Category A scholarship
For each student the scholarship amounts to 16.000 Euros per academic year. This includes 12 monthly grants of 1.000 Euros and a fixed amount of 4.000 Euros for fees, travel expenses, relocation costs, etc. Since our courses last two years, the student receives double this amount, i.e. 32.000 Euros.
Category B scholarship
For each student the scholarship amounts between 6.000 and 9.000 Euros per academic year (depending on the choices of mobility). This includes 12 monthly grants of 500 Euros and a fixed amount of 3.000 Euros (if you go for a mobility in a third country Partner University) for fees, travel expenses, relocation costs, etc. Since our courses last two years, the student receives for the whole Master 12.000 or 15.000 Euros.
What is the amount of the ALGANT Master tuition fee?
The tuition fee (per year) is 8 000 Euros for Category A scholarships holder and 4 000 Euros for Category B scholarships holder or local students.
I am a citizen of the European Union. Can I apply for the ALGANT Master Scholarship?
The ALGANT Scholarship is offered to graduate students from all over the world. Two categories of scholarship exist (see above for the eligibility for the category A or B scholarship).
In order to reinforce our collaboration with the African Institute for Mathematics Sciences the Consortium will consider very positively the applications of European students which would include a mobility to this particular partner.
However, if you are admitted in the ALGANT program but do not get selected for the ALGANT scholarship, we may help you to find some financial support (though we do not guarantee anything).
Am I obliged to have a IELTS test result to apply?
The answer is "yes and (sometimes) no". If you are not a native speaker of English, you must prove your English proficiency. You may do this by sending to us your score from one of the internationally recognized English testing systems, IELTS being one of them, but not the only one.
In exceptional cases, and if you do not include Leiden University as one of your destinations, you may avoid submitting to us English testing results, if you manage to convince us that your command of English is sufficient: for instance, you lived and/or worked several years in English-spoken environment, studied in university with English as the teaching language, etc. But we do not promise to accept every explanation of this kind.
However, if you include Leiden University as one of your destinations, then you are formally obliged to demonstrate your proficiency in English. This requirement does not apply only if you have completed your education in Canada, USA, UK, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia or if you have obtained an International Baccalaureate or European Baccalaureate diploma.
We prefer the IELTS test, but TOEFL, Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English are acceptable as well. Applicants from mainland China are required to submit an Academic IELTS test score (no other results are accepted) due to visa requirements, see below. Only Academic modules are accepted; we do not accept Institutional TOEFL scores. The certificates need to be recent: not older than 2 years. Minimum score: IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 213/550, but we prefer IELTS 6.5.
Students from the mainland China going to Leiden must have a Dutch NESO-certificate in due time. This is very important, no matter if they come to Leiden in the first year or the second year. The strict deadline is 1 June. It takes about two months to receive the certificate, so the Chinese students must apply before 1 April, and they must have the IELTS score by this time.
I already have a master degree in mathematics. May I apply?
Yes, you may.
I studied computer science (physics, engineering) etc. May I apply?
Formally, you may. But please take into account that we offer very advanced mathematical courses, so we expect excellence in mathematics from our candidates.

What are the mobility rules?
The doctoral candidates holding an Erasmus Mundus fellowship must perform their training/research periods in at least two different countries represented in the consortium.
For Category B fellowship holders, these two countries must be different from the country in which the doctoral candidate has obtained his/her last university degree. The candidate may choose his/her last degree (usually masters) awarding country if this degree was awarded in the context of a joint/double/multiple degree scheme.
Must I stay in Europe during all my Erasmus Mundus fellowship?
The doctoral candidates holding an Erasmus Mundus fellowship must spend most of the doctorate period in the European countries represented in the consortium or among the associated partners. However, if the EMJD consortium includes Third-Country partners and/or associated members, then:
- Category A fellowship holders can spend a training/research/ fieldwork period of a maximum duration of one semester (or 6 months, cumulative or consecutive) in these countries; periods in excess of this duration may not be covered by the EMJD fellowship;
- Category B fellowship holders can spend up to one year (cumulative or consecutive) of their doctorate activities in these countries; periods in excess of this duration may not be covered by the EMJD fellowship.
