Established in 2004 as an Erasmus Mundus Master between the universities of Bordeaux (France), Leiden (Netherlands) and Padova (Italy), ALGANT has grown into a consortium of eight universities. It offers a two-year world-class integrated master program with a strong emphasis on Algebra, Geometry and Number Theory.
In its first decade, with headquarters in Bordeaux and president Boas Erez at the helm of the consortium, Paris-Saclay (France), Milano (Italy) and Concordia (Montreal, Canada) joined ALGANT. In 2009, the Erasmus Mundus PhD program ALGANT Doctorate was established. It led to more than 40 ALGANT PhD degrees in cotutelle before this program was finally discontinued, when its Brussels funding came to an end.
The move of the ALGANT headquarters to Leiden in 2014 coincided with the enlargement of the consortium by the German universities of Duisburg-Essen and Regensburg. It was the start of a decade of ALGANT as a master consortium independent of Erasmus Mundus funding, with Peter Stevenhagen as its president. More than 400 ALGANT master degrees were conferred at the 17 graduation ceremonies in the period 2007-2023. The majority of the graduates continued with a PhD in mathematics in Europe or the US. Some of them already hold senior academic and industrial positions all over the world, others are still at an earlier stage of their career. They are united by the ALGANT Alumni Network.
The ALGANT Graduation 2024 in Leiden marked the 20th anniversary of the consortium and the start of its third decade. In January 2025, its headquarters will move again, this time to Padova, one of the three founding institutions in 2004.
